What are Eyelash Extensions?

What are they?

Eyelash extensions are artificial lashes that are attached to each individual natural lash. They help to enhance the length, curl, and fullness of your natural lashes. The procedure consists of applying one single artificial lash to one natural lash. The lashes can be made from different materials but the most commonly used is polyester.

What to expect:

Depending what you are looking for, you can expect:

  • longer, fuller lashes
  • more defined eyes
  • curled lashes
  • less work when it comes to getting ready in the morning!
  • relaxation for a few hours while receiving the procedure

What should I do to take care of my lash extensions between fills?

  • Avoid getting the lashes wet for 24 hours after the application
  • Avoid hot tubs, saunas, or pools. The extensions need the full 24 hours to bond properly. If possible wait 48 hours.
  • Clean your lashes regularly to prevent oil and dirt buildup.
  • When removing makeup you can use a q-tip with your proper makeup remover to prevent rubbing and tugging at the lashes.
  • Let lashes air dry, brush regularly using a spoolie
  • Use an oil-free eye makeup remover
  • Avoid oils, glycerin, harsh acids, and glycol around lash area
  • Try not to run water directly on your lashes
  • Do NOT touch, pull, or pick at your lashes (this can damage your natural lash and cause premature fall out)
  • Avoid sleeping on your lashes
  • Avoid mascara, but if you must, wear extension safe mascara (oil free, NOT waterproof) and only apply at tips NOT the base.
  • Avoid using an eyelash curler
  • Avoid receiving chemical treatments, such as eyelash tinting or perming
  • Avoid receiving irritating eye area treatments, such as strong chemical peels, skin re-surfacing procedures, or laser treatments

Frequently Asked Questions:

  • How should I prepare for my appointment? Arrive with no eye makeup in order to allow more time for lash application.
  • Will it damage my natural lashes? NO! This is one of the biggest myths! Eyelash extensions are a safe procedure, when applied correctly. Lash artists are trained to look for healthy, adult lashes to provide a suitable application site for the individual artificial lash. The young (baby) lashes are left alone so they can fully develop and become strong enough to support an artificial lash.
    • Your lashes will fall out naturally, just like your head hair, due to the natural growth cycle. It is harder to notice smaller, shorter lashes falling out so you will notice fallout more since the extensions are longer and darker than your natural lash. It is not because the artificial lash made them fall out.
    • If you choose to not maintain your lashes, once all the lashes fall out or are removed, your eyes will appear smaller and your lashes will appear shorter and potential look more sparse. This is only because you have become used to the longer, fuller lashes that now your eyes look bare without them.
  • How long does it take? Service times vary from person to person depending on the amount of lashes, size of eyes, and how much cleansing must be done prior to starting the application. You will be lying down for the whole service so you will be able to get some beauty sleep if you chose to. You should expect to relax for at least 2 hours, if you are receiving a full set of lashes.
  • How long will my new lashes last? In general your lashes will need to be filled within 2-4 weeks. This does depend on your lash cycle and how well you take care of them. The better care you take, the longer the lashes can last.
  • When should I come back to maintain my lashes/ get a fill ? Most fills are recommended to be done 2-4 weeks. But remember the longer you wait the higher the chance you have of needing a full set again. A good sign you need a fill would be when you see 50% of the artificial lashes gone. A fill can take up to 75 minutes. This timing depends on the state of your lashes. If a lash fill takes longer than 90 minutes we charge for a full set.
  • What can affect the life of my lash extensions? Factors such as exposure to humidity, steam, touching your eyes a lot, and improper removal of makeup may cause the extensions to fall quicker. So once again take gentle care of your lashes.
  • Can I wear mascara with my lash extensions? Yes, but you must apply water based mascara only to the tips of your lashes. DO NOT use waterproof or oil based mascara because this can affect the bond of the adhesive. Also waterproof can be more difficult to remove which can cause excessive rubbing of the lashes causing them to fall out.
  • What should I use to remove my eye makeup? I usually suggest taking a q-tip with your OIL-FREE makeup remover. Using a downward sweeping motion going from base to tip in order to remove mascara and eyeliner. As far as removing eyeshadow, you can take a q-tip or a cotton round and remove by only rubbing the lid not your lashes.

About my lash extension training: I did both online and hands on training in order to receive my certification as a lash artist. My online certification training consisted of learning proper application and techniques, along with eye anatomy, diseases of the eye, and eyelash health in order to prevent damage and irritation to the natural lashes and the eye area. So to sum it up, the online training was the book work to learn the safety and proper application techniques to give you the best and safest application and best last-ability of your lash extensions. My hands on training was just as the name portrays, hands on with a live model.
